Home at last

Last night we slept in the new house for the first time. We're sleeping on camp beds, air mattresses, and, in Liz's case, the floor...but we're home. (Phil's picking up Liz's air mattress today from someone at work.)

For the first time, all the girls slept in their own rooms. For Liz and Kelly, it's the first time they've had their own rooms, instead of sharing with a sister. I wondered how that would go, but neither of them crept into the other's room last night, so apparently they were fine.

This morning, I could restart the woodstove just by adding wood to the hot embers, instead of needing to use paper and kindling. The house was cool when we woke up, but not cold, and the boiler didn't have to turn on to keep the house at a reasonable temperature.

We're home.

There are definitely some "growing pains" that will be happening as we get settled, though. This morning, I couldn't find my robe, even though I know that it was packed somewhere yesterday, and I'm having to feel my way through the right balance of coffee/water with my french press again. (New brand/grind of coffee means new formula to learn.) Most of my clothes are still at the rental, even though everyone else's are here. (I'm heading back up today to grab the last of our stuff, and give it a good cleaning before turning the keys back in to the landlord.)

When I went to make breakfast and lunch for Phil, I realized that I hadn't brought any of the food from the fridge at the rental...which included the maple syrup (so no pancakes),  the mayo (for a meat/cheese sandwich in his lunch), the creamer for my coffee (doh!), and yogurt for muesli. Then I went digging through the box that I had brought the current load of cupboard food from the rental in...and couldn't find the good peanut butter to even send a fluffenutter in Phil's lunch.  I did have the kid's peanut butter, so I could use that (not ideal, but better than nothing) and then realized that I also hadn't grabbed the ziploc sandwich bags yet (doh! again.) Sigh. Well, at least I had quart sized ziplocs that I had bought to use for storing leftovers.

So, I did manage to put together breakfast and lunch. I've realized, too, that while I have dishes, cooking utensils, and basic pans (thank you Carolyn!), I don't have mixing bowls, except for one big plastic bowl that I bought for serving salad in at a Halloween party. Oops! Well, I've worked with very little in a kitchen before, so I know I'll be able to make this work.

Still...even with all the imperfections and work still to be done...it's home.
