For the first time in my life, I'm going to vote today. I've been old enough to vote for a very long time, but I never saw the point. In my mind, an uninformed voter was worse than someone who didn't vote at all, and I wasn't ever that informed. I also believed that the person in the white house didn't affect my life as much as the people in the senate did...trusting in the checks and balances built into the system.
Well...this time it matters. To me, and to my daughters, it matters.
When I was seeing Trump on the news a year ago, I thought it was a joke, and that he'd drop out, or at the very least, get beaten by someone else in the primaries. I mean...how could someone who talked and acted like he did actually get elected?
And then...he was the nominee.
To a certain extent, I still trust the checks and balances built into the system. I'm not as worried about the laws he would try to pass, or policies he would try to implement, as I am to what would happen on a social level if he becomes president.
A year ago, I was saying that America has enough of an image problem with the rest of the world, and that Trump would only make it worse. I still believe that. But now I'm actually worried about things closer to home.
"Someone who's mean to ladies shouldn't get to be president".
That was a quote from a child on one of the commercials that was playing last fall, and I totally agree. The attitude that Trump portrays toward women truly scares me...because he's showing other people that it's ok to act like that. He's teaching an entire generation of young men that it's appropriate behavior, and teaching an entire generation of young women that they don't matter.
Women aren't the only group that he is demeaning toward, but it's the group that I'm a part of, and the group that my daughters are apart of. So...that's the group that hits me hardest.
The fact that he's been belittling other groups...pretty much anyone who'd not a rich, white, male, as far as I can tell...adds fuel to idea that this is not a man I want representing our country. It scares me.
Yeah...I want a do-over for this election. I want a better set of candidates. But I will vote anyway. I still want a "anyone except ____" option...but they don't offer that. So I will register, and I will vote...and I will pray that the election results will not make my daughters' and my lives even harder.

Honey, I don't know you, but I know (and love) Alice Eads. She thought I'd like your post, and she was right. I'm glad you take this seriously. I'm glad your daughter has you as a role model. I'm glad you are voting. It does make a difference. We all do!
